Poker Glossary

Presented below is the poker glossary which defines the meaning of common poker terms used in the game. It is important to mention here that apart from the poker terms listed here, so many other poker slang terms are also used by various poker players. However listed here in the glossary of poker, are only those basic terms which have a specific meaning in the game of poker.

Ante: It is defined as the bet placed by all players before a hand is dealt. In other words ante represents the cost of being able to play in that particular hand.

Bet: In the game of poker, the bet is defined as the act of putting money into the pot.

Blind: Blind in poker games is used in place of ante sometimes. It can be defined as the bet placed by the player sitting to the left hand side of the dealer prior to the situation when hand is dealt.

Bluff: Bluffing in the card game of poker takes place when a player place bet aggressively despite being having a weak hand, trying to get the other players to fold.

Bug: A bug in the poker game is represented by the jo0ker play card. It is also used as a wild card in some of the poker games. And in some games, it is a limited wild card, in which case the joker acts as an ace. If the joker is the fifth card needed to complete a flush or a straight, it becomes whichever card is required.

Buy-in: It is defined as the amount of money required to get an entry into a poker game.

Call: In poker games, call indicates placing into the pot that much amount of money which is equal to the previous bets made for that betting round.

Check: A check in poker games can be defined as a bet of nothing. If during the betting round, there is not any bet placed, the player whose turn it is to bet can bet nothing, and pass the opportunity to bet to the player to her left. If everyone checks all the way around the table, the betting round ends.

Fold: The fold in poker game means drop out of the hand since player thinks that his cards are not good enough to win. When player folds, there is no need to put any more money into the pot, and player forfeits any chance at winning it.

Hand: A hand is a combination of cards, usually five, that is compared to the other players' hands to see who wins. The word hand is also used to mean a single round of poker.

Pot: The pot in poker game is the prize set for a poker hand. There is a pot in the poker game which is made by the antes or blinds along with all the bets placed during that hand. In the end, the player who possesses the best hand wins the pot.

Showdown: In the poker game, the showdown marks the end of the hand, when rest of the players show their cards to check which player is having the best hand.

Wild card: A wild card in poker game represents the card whose worth is decided by the player holding it.
